Navisworks
Autodesk's coordination + clash detection tool — where federated BIM models are checked for conflicts.
What is Navisworks?
Navisworks (specifically Navisworks Manage) is the tool BIM Coordinators live in. It takes Revit models from architecture, structure, and MEP disciplines, federates them into a single coordinated model, and runs **clash detection** — automatic checks for physical conflicts (a duct passing through a beam, a pipe through a column).
A typical multi-storey project has 5,000+ clashes when first federated. The Coordinator's job is to prioritise, filter, and resolve these — issuing RFIs (Requests for Information) back to designers, tracking resolutions, and re-running the clash check.
Navisworks also does **4D scheduling** (linking model elements to construction schedule dates) and **5D cost integration** (linking to budgets). These are the senior-level features that distinguish a BIM Coordinator from a BIM Modeller.
Navisworks coordination skill is the gap between a ₹4 LPA modeller and a ₹9 LPA coordinator in India — and the differentiator UAE hiring panels probe for.
A BIM Coordinator at AECOM India runs weekly Navisworks clash detection on a Bengaluru hospital project. Each week, 200 new clashes are flagged; the coordinator triages them, sends RFIs to the architecture + MEP teams, and tracks resolution before the next site meeting.
