Building Information Modeling — a data-rich 3D process for designing, building and managing infrastructure. Unlike 2D CAD, a BIM model is a digital twin embedding materials, costs, schedules and systems that every discipline coordinates on.
2. Explain the BIM dimensions 3D, 4D, 5D and 6D.
3D is the geometric model, 4D links the construction schedule (time), 5D adds cost and quantities (BOQ), and 6D holds facility-management and operations data for the building lifecycle.
3. What is clash detection and how do you run it?
Finding where elements from different disciplines conflict — e.g. a duct through a beam. You aggregate discipline models in Navisworks, run clash tests, group and prioritise clashes, and issue reports for teams to resolve before site work.
4. What is a BIM Execution Plan (BEP)?
A document agreed at project start that defines how BIM will be delivered — roles, responsibilities, standards, software, LODs, coordination and data exchange — aligned to ISO 19650.
5. What are worksets in Revit?
Worksets divide a model so multiple people can work on the same project at once via a central file, each owning parts to avoid conflicts. They are essential for team collaboration.
6. What is LOD in BIM?
Level of Development/Detail — how much geometric and information detail an element carries at a stage, from LOD 100 (conceptual) to LOD 500 (verified as-built). It sets expectations for how a model can be used.
7. How do you extract a BOQ from a Revit model?
Use schedules / quantity take-off to pull element quantities (areas, volumes, counts) straight from the model, then format and export (often to Excel) for costing. Model-based quantities are faster and more accurate than manual take-off.
8. Why does ISO 19650 matter?
It is the international standard for managing information across a project lifecycle using BIM, ensuring consistent, structured, well-governed data exchange between all parties. Global projects increasingly require it.
9. What is the difference between Revit and AutoCAD?
AutoCAD is primarily 2D/3D drafting of lines and shapes. Revit is a BIM tool where you model intelligent building elements carrying data, and drawings and schedules update automatically from the model.
10. How do you coordinate MEP with structure?
Link discipline models with shared coordinates, use copy/monitor for shared elements, run clash detection in Navisworks, and resolve conflicts (e.g. reroute a duct around a beam) in coordination meetings before construction.
